2 'Mary Long'(Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice) - from the Deep Purple album 'Who do we think we are'Mary Long is a composite name. Mary Whitehouse and Lord Longford were the self-appointed guardians of public morals in England's early seventies. Mary told 'Johnny' (that's Johnny Speight, a TV writer who made the establishment cringe) not to write such trash….a waste of public money…the BBC (who were bravely responsible) is funded by public money. These people would rail against anything which might be considered 'untoward'. They were the publicity conscious PC fascists of their day; nothing much changes except that the currently self-righteous use the bon mot 'inappropriate'. Roger and I clearly were not suggesting that either Whitehouse or Longford would stoop to drowning kittens or drawing a piece of graffito on a toilet wall, but there is and always has been a sinister whiff of hypocrisy emanating from the pulpit of the pious. Mary Long( Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice)Mary Long is a hypocrite How did you lose your virginity, Mary Long? Mary told Johnny not to write such trash How did you lose your virginity, Mary Long? Mary Long you're not alone How did you lose your virginity, Mary Long? |
